Wallace sets his crossword down on the ledge on his side, with the shadow of his head bent down behind the frosted partition as if in a confessional, and gets to work. His free forearm appears through the open section and unfurls the blond hair down over itself, past the opposite ledge. Pause. Conchata reaches her hand slowly up until it reaches the tips of the longest strands. It looks as if the hair is standing straight on her upturned palm. She spreads her fingers, rolling them under each strand. Lights out.
