We used to quote from Sure, The Charles Bukowski Newsletter, which had also provided free use of Buk's cartoons, on a monthly basis, but other Webbers wound up doing the same. The current poem, written upon Buk's death, was emailed by a kind reader of our pages...

My Buddy from Nowhere

We were going to rent one
or maybe steal one?
a beer truck
full
and we were going to drive it
across the country
and park it
in front of his house
and lean on the horn
and smash bottles
and demand that he come out
and help us finish what was left

But I couldn't even get his address
For the birthday card
I tried to send him on his 60th
and so
instead
I settled
for the recurring fantasy
of somehow getting through
via publisher
or pub
and finally
swapping unwritten words
comparing our
sirens and sluts
dead-end marriages
and careers
blow-jobs
and bar fights
in a neon night
electric enough
to still
for a couple of hours
our hurtle to death.
