"Meatball doesn't work that way!"

If you're too young to remember the Comics Code Authority, the industry's answer to the Hayes Code or the MPAA ratings system, then Ron Mann's CD-Rom "Comic Book Confidential" has the whole thing and more. Whitestar's four-volume tape compilation, "The H istory of the Comics," with its Katzenjammer Kids and Peanuts sections, is polite stuff compared to this.

Documentary material includes R. Crumb reminiscing about how he invented Mr. Natural during a drug-induced interlude, and Lynda "Ernie Pook's Komeek" Barry on menses and home ec class. Archival footage of the Senate hearings on delinquency in the 50s spo rts William Gaines, coming to the defense of those "Tales from the Crypt" type stories.

Bios, bibliographies, learned commentary go head to head with less self-important material, like scenes of writers interacting with their graphics, including 150 examples of comic art. Sue Coe, Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, Al Feldstein, Frank Miller, Charles Burns, Art Spiegelman, Gilbert Shelton and the pillars of underground society cover alternative publications from the 30s to the 80s.

Comic Book Confidential is available in Mac format for $49.95.
