Radio-Keith-Orpheum was formed in 1928 in the rush to convert to sound. The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) had developed a sound process called Photophone but was unable to attract a major studio as a partner. So the president of RCA David Sarnoff turned to financier Joseph P. Kennedy, patriarch of the Kennedy political family and at that time owner of a small studio, Film Booking Office (FBO). By the close of 1928 Sarnoff and Kennedy had merged Photophone, FBO, and the theaters from the Keith-Albee-Orpheum vaudeville empire to create RKO.
