"The ASL Video Series was developed using humor and easy-to-learn steps that make you want to learn more! To get the maximum benefit from the series, we realized that it was important for you to see how real deaf people communicate. Therefore, the program displays American Sign Language (ASL) from real deaf people (not actors and actresses) in very natural settings."
-- James R. DeBee, President/Producer

Deaf History

Laurent Clerc, 1785-1869 (30 minutes, with voice-over and open captioning, $29.99) is a fascinating documentary about the first and best-known deaf teacher, French-born Laurent Clerc (1785-1869). It is a story of how Clerc came to America with Thomas Gallaudet and started the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. Clerc is known as "Father of the Deaf" for many reasons. He helped create sign language, established the first permanent school for the deaf in America, and taught the founders of almost all the other schools in America. He became the first deaf person ever to appear before Congress and the President of the United States. Clerc struggled courageously to break through the barriers of silence and to create his own deaf society and culture where none had existed prior to his arrival. This is a story of how Clerc worked hard to give deaf people the education they so desperately needed, and to tell the hearing world all the possibilities for deaf people. Finally, this story is an inspiration to all deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people everywhere.
The LACD Los Angeles Club of the Deaf Story (30 minutes, with voice-over and closed captions or subtitles, $29.99) depicts the history of a deaf club in a large city. The video captures members' feelings and memories toward their clubhouse, shares fond memories of friendships cultivated at the club, and dramatizes the story of the rise and fall of a powerful social organization within the Deaf community. The program includes numerous black and white archival film clips, which show the many club activities from the 1940s to the present. This program won an Emmy award for Best Producer and Director as well as a Cable ACE Award.

"I think it's important to notice that L.A.C.D. was the first clubhouse to be owned by the Deaf people in the United States."
-- Lil Skinner
"There 's nothing like L.A.C.D. Never! Ever!
-- Lou Dyer
"I know and love this place. I hate to see it go!"
-- Jerry Fail
