Throughout the US regional filmakers have made their marks at different times and in different ways. North Carolina is where my story starts, for personal reasons. But each independent has left a legacy of films.
Nestled off what would be called a small country road in most of the States is EO Studio - The Most Efficient Motion Picture Complex In The World. That's what my coffee cup says, and every time I meet someone who worked there I find out they have one too, and won't use it so it doesn't ever break! How often can you say that about commemorative cups?
With an 18-unit on-site motel (where I stayed), lotsa facilities, a private airstrip and 117 acres of lovely countryside, EO has everything you could want to shoot with, on or about - and you can see it all in Earl Owensby movies!
Most people do not know the name Earl Owensby. Yet he has starred in over 10 feature films studied in classes at Duke University, and hosted the production of such notable features as The Abyss and TV shows like Probe. Earl and EO Studios have been featured in more newspapers, magazines and tv shows than I can memorize - including the high point, explaining to Morely Safer how to mix up fake blood on 60 Minutes.
Fact is, when Earl did his interview for that show, the flatbed editor he was sitting in front of was me! It was brand new and he had not yet had a chance to use the machine, so I sat off camera ready to push the play button on cue. My wife jokes that she remembers all this from when she was 12 years old, so she had already spied her future husband - or at least his hand.
