Beauty and the Beast
Contest Essay 2

Fairy tales, myths and fantasy were always important in my life. As a young girl growing up in the fifties and sixties, I was surrounded by fairy tales and myths. I remember trips to the library and checking out the Brothers' Grimm stories. The first book I ever purchased with my own money was a book of fairy tales (I still have it). My favorite comic was a Classics Comics version of Beauty and the Beast (a copy of which I was recently reunited with ). My youth was filled with dreams of what was ahead and the things I could do if I only held on to my dreams. Youth and dreams fade over the years without your even realizing it. You become caught up in everyday things, succeed in a few accomplishments, compromise on some, forget others.

This version of Beauty and the Beast reached right into my imagination. It pulled out things I had forgotten were there. It gave me courage to overcome fears and find lost talents buried deep inside. I found they were truly not lost. I don't know how or why, but I believe in the magic of this fairy tale.

Every time Vincent told Catherine she had the strength, that she had important things to do with her life ... he was talking to me also. He looked beyond her hollow shell and deep into her heart. I saw Catherine as the beast that evolved. I watched as Catherine evolved into a stronger, more confident, caring person. "Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave."

As she grew, I grew. It sparked my imagination.

I picked up my pencils and started to draw. I needed to draw, pushing it as far as I could take it and to share, even though I feared the sharing of what I did. Through sharing I learned to be more confident, even in my job and family. The TV show has had a visible impact on my life.

I believe in the need for dreams, and I believe in fairy tales.
