The Ziehm Story

(...in Howard's own words.)

I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1940 - yeah I'm getting old. I was an Army Brat, living in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, Germany right after the war, and California. I attended high school in Monterey California where I developed my love for Golf. I went to MIT for three years majoring in Math, Physics, Electrical Engineering back to Math and on to Drop Out. Part of my problem was I couldn't stay out of the Old Howard burlesque theatre in Boston's famed Scully Square (now remodeled as Government Center) I took up folk guitar, became a beatnik, left school and hitch-hiked to Berkely California in 1960 where I opened a coffee house theatre called "The Cabal." This was the time of the "free speech movement" and I recall seeing my first "real" communist, Mario Savio, on the steps of the Berkely Student Union. Janice Joplin often played at my club at hootenany nights, but she only knew 6 songs so I never hired her. At Berkely I smoked my first marijuana cigarette and took LSD. Drugs were very new and they seemed innocuous. I was even so stupid as to smuggle grass in from Mexico, stashed under my back-seat or inside the tubeless tires of my car. It still makes me shudder when I think of the possible consequences. Hindsight has made me realize that drugs were a tremendous mistake. I sold my club in Berkely and went back to Boston, just bumming around doing odd jobs, including running kilos of grass from California where I could buy a Key for $50 and sell it in Boston for $150. I was on an adventure kick and I hitch-hiked across Canada and hopped freight trains out of California to Chicago. Eventually I wound up in Los Angeles where I still dabbled in drug dealing. After being set up and burned several times it became obvious that this was not a way to make money. I started a Rock and Roll band with some friends. There was, is and never will be a worse band. After 6 months the band broke up and Bill Osco, who was living in a rooming house with the rest of us, and myself started making Beaver movies as I mentioned earlier. After the Flesh Gordon film I made several Porno features that include Honey Pie, Star Virgins and Naughty Network all of which have been named to the Jim Nash's 100 Best of All Time list. I made my last adult film in 1979 and since then have produced an audio self help vocabulary improvement series for Bantam Books called Word Builders and another for Simon and Schuster called WordBank. I wanted to prove to myself I could do something that didn't involve sex. Currently I live in Malibu with my wife of 26 years, Judith and 4 chow dogs. I like kids but I don't have any - thank god. Besides rebuilding my home, which burned down in the 1993 Malibu fire, I occupy my time working on a book called GOLF IN THE COMIC STRIPS, the end product of a 4 thousand strip collection of comic strips that parody golf that I have assembled over the last 5 years. The strips date all the way back to "The Yellow Kid" of 1896. I have also written a script that needs no explanation called Lawyer Killer which I am endeavoring to produce.
