The Gingko Bed

CineLine's First Release

Korean cinema is still very new to the US, especially to home video here. This particular film is reminiscent in style of the sweeping costume adventures of Hong Kong. Yet the elements of art and music in it, as well as the folk elements of its central ghost story, come from their own special traditions. The strong drama of its plot is often wordless, adding up to a "diverting romantic thriller" Variety reviewed as "at its best"!

Writer/director Jacky Kang was born in 1962 at Masan, Korea. Kang attended ChungAng University, majoring in Film and Drama, before making a feature film debut with The Gingko Bed in 1996. This film appeared in Cannes, Stockholm, and Brussels as well as at the New York Asian-American International Film Festival that year. Now you can experience the romance and fantasy of this centuries-spanning adventure on home video!

Two of the four starcrossed lovers in Gingko Bed! The hero, Su-hyun, is a thirtysomething art teacher with a good life, fine friends and a strong romance. But his world will soon be turned upside down by an antique bed carved from the wood of a haunted gingko tree. In another lifetime, Su-hyun served as court musician and secret lover to an ancient princess named Mi-dan. This woman's soul is still trapped in that bed after 1000 years!

As the ghostly Mi-dan reaches out to Su-hyun, their reawakened love alerts the spirit of General Hwang. He is the jealous husband who destroyed the couple once before, and intends to do so again!
