"I am a rose like him!"

Ironbound Vampire

Page 4

Jennifer: Did she think you were lying or something?

Karl: No she just didn't like the fact that I was there. To this day I don't know why. I just gave up the project. I wanted to tell her about it because if we were shooting in the city of Newark, and they saw our company out there shooting something on the street, that they would know what we were doing. So it's not a surprise. And if we did come to them asking any questions they would know why we were asking these questions. What she did was she practically threw me out of the place for no reason. I guess they like negative publicity…

Jennifer: I can imagine they'd been told before that something was going to be positive and then had it turn out to be negative.

Karl: In this case I explained to her exactly what I was doing. I told her that I spoke to Hank Martinez. I said I was a resident of Newark, I grew up there.

Jennifer: So your being from around there didn't make a difference?

Karl: Didn't make a difference at all… I said, that's it, I will never do a documentary about Newark. I just went ahead and did this vampire movie… I learned, don't ask any permissions -

Jennifer: Just go! I also wanted to talk about the Ed Wood connection… (to Conrad) Were you approached? Did somebody come to you and say, "I'm a fan, and I want to bring you and Delores Fuller together"?

Conrad: That's right, that's the way it happened.

Jennifer: Were you at a convention or something?

Conrad: I was at a show - was it Chiller? I thought it was down in Baltimore. We get around a lot! (Laughs)

Jennifer: So it was just a verbal pitch?

Conrad: Yeah, I liked the role. It was a cameo. I liked the character Ambrose, the servant… I've been a servant all my life!

Jennifer: How seriously do you take these things, I mean, do you have a lot of people come up to you and say stuff like that?

Karl: Well in the B movie genre, how many people know Conrad? (to Conrad) You've been in almost 200 movies, right?

Conrad: Close to it.

Karl: If you look at for example, Polish Vampire in Burbank, Conrad's there.

Conrad: [As a] bartender!

Karl: Also Fred Olen Ray movies -

Conrad: Bikini Drive In!

Karl: So you know that you have somebody who's known in the B movies… you have a known star.

Steve: (to Conrad) Do you live in the DC area?

Conrad: [Yes]. I'm originally from Baltimore. But I was out in California for fifteen long years. I just finally gave it up. They gave me up! (Laughs)

[The conversation turns to local filmmaking and conventions in the Northeast.]

Conrad: Fanex in July [1998] - I'm usually there. In fact we'll have the world premiere [of Ironbound Vampire] there, in Baltimore. A big opening.
