"I am a rose like him!"

Ironbound Vampire

Page 5

Jennifer: Is this technically not released? I mean is this [video] screener a pre-release?

Karl: Right. Actually the movie's not out yet. It's been doing very well just going to the shows. So people who've heard of it have requested mail order, and have gotten [a rough cut of] the movie. But actually it won't be released for about another month, and the first time out to be shown in public will be at the Fanex show.

Jennifer: It looked like from what wound up in the movie that for [Conrad] and Delores' scenes… they had a party and then they shot some scenes…!

Karl: We actually staged the whole party.

Jennifer: People were having fun!

Karl: Right! Actually what really happened was that we had a house that we were supposed to shoot this thing in. Everything was all set for all the people to be there, technicians - everybody, ready to go. The day before, the people pulled out…

Jennifer: They had second thoughts?

Karl: They said, well, they had personal problems and apologized… We're not getting into details, but what happened is there's an attorney I do work for. In a panic… we asked the attorney if he knew of a house, hoping he would take the hint and say, "You can use my house." And he took the hint! So everything had to be changed… He said, "If you need a few guests, I'll bring some." So there's a couple high-powered attorneys who don't have their names on - they don't want their names attached to any movie.

Jennifer: And the kid in shades, too, didn't want to be identified? (Laughter)

Karl: But they were good enough to let us use the house. So we were there and all the layouts - when you're ready to shoot something you know where the staircase is, where you'll put your lights… Everything was set up for the other house, then at the last minute it's like, duh!

Jennifer: "Where are the outlets?"

Karl: Where are we gonna set up the lights, how are these people going to come in, how are we gonna shoot the camera angles? And they only gave us a few hours to shoot there. They were working, and they said, "Well, you could be here for a few hours." Not knowing that a scene like that should have took 8 to 10 hours; we had to get through in three! Luckily Conrad and Delores and everyone, it was like, one take, two takes and that was it!

Conrad: And we crashed the party!

Steve: (to Conrad) Would you say you're retired now, or do you do a lot of these small shoots?

Conrad: I'll never retire. I better not, I owe too much money to people! (Laughs)

Jennifer: I'd think this is the place to be for movies like this because it seems like all these guys are in New Jersey -

Conrad: - that wanna make films, right! It's great!

Steve: It seems like a real renaissance in this area, of low-budget filmmaking.

Conrad: I came here [NJ] to do this picture. I was still in Hollywood at the time, so I came in - actually Karl had me set for one day. He was so impressed with my performance (laughter) he brought me back! It cost him more money, but he brought me back for two more days.

Jennifer: So was shooting in Newark scary?

Conrad: Yeah, that's why I keep coming back!
