Zatoichi, The Blind Swordsman

The Zatoichi series was as beloved of the spaghetti western stars as "Seven Samurai" or the Lone Wolf and Cub" films. Even though Clint Eastwood never made the remakes he had once planned, the originals are timeless and universal folktales. This preternaturally gifted blind swordsman Ichi is a classic underdog figure, who skewers the pretensions (and the guts) of anyone who tries to exploit the weak or the disenfranchised. Ichi is different from the cold and distant figures of American actions pictures - his humor and emotions are restrained, but warmly genuine nonetheless. No better example of this can be seen than in the very first Zatoichi film, with its touching friendship between the tubercular swordsman Hirate and fellow drifter, Ichi.
