A Personal Message From Tim Abel, Producer, Fuzzy Paw Inc.
In June 1999, Fuzzy Paw Incorporated released the children's video Dogs Work Too, Yes They Do! This inspirational documentary highlights dogs and instructors from The Seeing Eye, The United States Border Collie Club, and the District of Columbia Arson Investigation Unit.
As co-producer and writer of Dogs Work Too, my biggest challenge was to create a highly entertaining experience that would encourage educational interaction between children and adults. One of my influences was Fred Levine's grass-roots approach to video production. In reality-based videos such as Cleared for Takeoff and Road Construction Ahead, Fred Levine enables the audience to experience people, places and events and encourages them to ask questions about what they have seen and heard. I wrote the script for Dogs Work Too to empower children to ask questions about what they watch and the messages to which they are exposed.
The result is a video that documents a story of trust, dedication and love between instructors, dogs and the lives of the people they help. I hope that you will be part of this adventure.

The colorful box for this semi-animated tape announces "the educational video about working dogs," but there's humor and verve to accompany the earnestness. The best part takes place on location at The Seeing Eye in Morristown, NJ. After a short historical intro you see trainers in action. The concept of "intelligent disobedience" is used to train the dog to keep its owner safe. This presentation of refusing to follow an order you think is mistaken or unwise is a novel way to encourage kids to make informed moral judgements. It's no mean feat that Tim Abel, who hosts (in a human-size dog suit no less) and had a hand in practically every task, was able to combine location video shoots and studio segments seamlessly. His choices of jaunty folk-rock songs are icing on the cake; a welcome respite from the heavy metal and corporate rap you hear on other such tapes.
