The Gun Is Loaded

Lydia Lunch is the postmodern Everywoman, as video artists Merrill Aldighieri and Joe Tripician call her; perhaps America's only federally funded dominatrix. If she's not in a two-woman poetry slam with Exene Cervenka, it's because she's posing nu de for Film Threat or popping up in the odd Penn & Teller video.

This tape, "The Gun Is Loaded," doesn't have the intimate poetry of her work with Beth B. Pacing through deserted alleyways, stamping on countertops, tearing her way around soundstages, Lydia is a loose cannon here - and shooting her mouth off happens to be her chosen art form.

The directors on her State of the Union Address:
"Identifying herself as 'the average all-American girl-next-door gone bad,' Lydia excavates her own sustained damage as a product of this emotionally ravaging environment. Her strong sense of irony is accented by the humorous juxtapositions of locations, scenery, news footage, real-life street action, and the deranged music of J. G. Thirlwell."
