Neil McDonald of Scotland, a David Warner fan and concierge of both the Fleapit Film Club Website and its real world counterpart, sent us a transcript of a 1989 interview. It was conducted with the actor in lieu of an appearance at a Glasgow Science Fiction Convention:
1: DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE RUMOURS OF THE PLANNED SEQUELS TO BOTH MORGAN:A SUITABLE CASE FOR TREATMENT AND TIME AFTER TIME, AND IF SO, WILL YOU BE INVOLVED IN THEM?
I have heard that the rights to Morgan have been sold to a company in America. I don't know if there is a planned sequel or re-make. I know of no plans for Time After Time. I will not be involved.
2: COULD YOU TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN STAR TREK V:THE FINAL FRONTIER?
My role in Star Trek V has been truncated and though I appear in the film all the way through - nobody really knows why I'm there.
3: DID YOU ENJOY YOUR RECENT (ALBEIT A FEW YEARS AGO NOW) EXCURSIONS INTO TELEVISION WITH CHARLIE AND HOLD THE BACK PAGE! WOULD YOU HAVE LIKE TO HAVE MADE MORE EPISODES OF BOTH SERIES?
I really loved Charlie and Hold the Back Page!. There was a chance of a series of Charlie at the time, but it never came off - Hold the Back Page! didn't get the audience so we didn't do a second season - had either of those 2 continued I might still be living in the UK.
4: WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO MORE TELEVISION WORK IN BRITAIN AND IF SO, IN WHAT TYPE OF PROGRAMMES? (I FEEL YOU WOULD MAKE AN EXCELLENT DOCTOR WHO, WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN PLAYING SUCH A ROLE, OR TAKING PART IN THE SERIES AT ALL)?
I would like to do TV in Britain - not Dr. Who though. I believe they were interested in me for the role pre Tom Baker.
5: DO YOU THINK THAT PEOPLE TEND TO CAST YOU AS THE "BADDIE" A LOT, AND AREN'T YOU AFRAID OF BEING TYPECAST IN SUCH ROLES?
It seems that the 'powers that be' see me as the 'Heavy' - that means that I have become typecast - yes it does worry me as I don't enjoy playing these roles.
6: WHAT AMBITIONS DO YOU HAVE IN THE FIELD OF ACTING?
The old cliche - just to keep paying the rent.
7: OF ALL THE ROLES YOU HAVE PLAYED OVER THE YEARS - WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY?
Of course Morgan and Time After Time. Any of the 3 Sam Peckinpah movies I was in. I know I've left out a few.
8: OF ALL THE FILMS YOU HAVE MADE, WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY?
Always the last one I finished.
9: YOU HAVE APPEARED IN A NUMBER OF SCIENCE FICTION/FANTASY FILMS OVER THE YEARS - IS THIS COINCIDENCE, OR ARE YOU A FAN OF THE GENRE?
I'm not a particular fan of SF/F in general. There seem to be more of these being made in the US at the moment. Maybe the climate will change. Again I think producers approach me because I have done so many.
10: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
Again just to keep on working, maybe once to play the hero and get the girl.
